THE MALTESE ORIGIN OF CHRISTMAS \u2013 THE STORY OF NIKOLA<\/strong> – from Siggiewi, Malta<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This year, Doninu (Malta) International<\/strong> is proudly working to revive and share a unique Maltese Christmas tradition\u2014one that, according to this heritage narrative, was born on the islands of Malta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Beginning \u2013 A Man Named Nikol<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Generations ago, there lived a humble man named Nikol<\/strong>, named in honor of Saint Nicholas<\/strong>, whom he deeply admired and followed. Witnessing the poverty around him\u2014families struggling, children without food or joy\u2014Nikol felt called to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven by compassion and inspired by Saint Nicholas, he chose not to ignore suffering, but to bring hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Santa \u2013 Created in Malta<\/strong> in the year 1600<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As Christmas approached in Malta, Nikol and his wife Marija<\/strong>, who was from Si\u0121\u0121iewi<\/strong>, came up with a remarkable idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They collected old Maltese flags that were no longer in use. Carefully, they cut and stitched the fabric together to create a special costume\u2014red and white, inspired by Saint Nicholas himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this moment, a new character was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They called him \u201cSanta.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mastru Nikola \u2013 The Craftsman of Joy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Nikol was known in his village as \u201cMastru Nikola\u201d<\/strong>, a skilled craftsman. He worked with wood, metal, and any materials he could find. He was also a clever trader and builder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From scraps of wood, he created toys.
From paper and clay gathered from places like G\u0127ajn Tuffie\u0127a<\/strong>, he built cribs and figurines.
Nothing was wasted\u2014everything was transformed into something meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helping him was a young assistant named \u010aikku ta\u017c-\u017be<\/strong>, a shy but talented boy who lived near Nikol\u2019s small workshop on a nearby farm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Christmas Journey<\/strong> – YEAR 1600<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Together, they prepared gifts for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Christmas Eve, at around six in the evening, Nikol and \u010aikku loaded all the gifts onto a handmade sleigh\u2014built from a cart. The sleigh was pulled by three donkeys<\/strong>, and to ease the burden, they added a strong animal named Rudolfu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, they began their journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From house to house, farm to farm, they traveled across the Maltese countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children would open their doors and see this mysterious figure\u2014dressed in red and white, with a large white beard made of cotton. They did not recognize him, but they felt joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gave them gifts, wished them a Merry Christmas, and quietly moved on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grand Master\u2019s Encounter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On that very night, the Grand Master<\/strong> happened to pass by in his carriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curious, he asked what this elderly man was doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When told that Mastru Nikola was distributing gifts to bring joy to children, the Grand Master was deeply moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He ordered his knights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen this man finishes his journey tonight, bring him to my palace. I wish to know more about him and his idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Recognition and Support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After all the gifts were delivered, \u010aikku returned the animals to the farm, while Mastru Nikola was escorted to the Grand Master\u2019s palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There, they spoke at length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Grand Master was inspired by Nikol\u2019s kindness and vision. He promised to support this tradition, ensuring that Christmas would become a time of joy, generosity, and love<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Tradition Born in Malta<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And so, from this small island full of heart, a tradition was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A story of giving.
A story of love.
A story of Santa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Legacy Continues<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, Doninu (Malta) International<\/strong> is reviving this powerful Maltese legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through a remarkable encounter, Doninu<\/strong> met Mastru Kola<\/strong>, a descendant of Mastru Nikola\u2014now the ten generation carrying this legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As tradition dictates, Mastru Kola has passed this mission to his eldest son. Yet now, he returns to Malta\u2014the place where it all began\u2014to once again bring joy to children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together with Doninu<\/strong>, this legacy will live again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Malta, With Love<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From a small island, rich in compassion and humanity,
a tradition was born that continues to inspire the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christmas 2026 Initiative \u2013 Doninu (Malta) International<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Doninu (Malta) International<\/strong> is proud to announce a special Christmas initiative that combines music, outreach, and community care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To date, Pierre<\/strong> Calleja<\/strong>, acting as recording engineer and songwriter, has successfully written over 40 original Christmas songs<\/strong>, with a total of 35 songs already professionally recorded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of this initiative, Doninu and Mastru Kola<\/strong> will be actively present across Malta during the Christmas season, bringing joy directly to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
