Gillu the Hero
Gillu the Hero is the nephew of Doninu and is only nine years old. From a very young age, he learned a great deal from his uncle about kindness, compassion, and standing up for others—especially for children who are vulnerable or treated unfairly.
Inspired by these values, Gillu chose to become a “hero” not for fame or recognition, but so that he could stand up for all children. When Gillu says “all,” he truly means everyone—without exceptions, without discrimination, and with full inclusion.
Because of his strong sense of justice, empathy, and courage, Gillu will now lead the Children’s Section within DONINU (MALTA) INTERNATIONAL. In this role, he will be there for other children, representing their voices and concerns. With the guidance and support of Doninu, Gillu will ask the authorities important and sometimes difficult questions, such as:
- Why are children’s rights not being fully implemented for everyone?
- Why are children with disabilities, children like him, not always listened to or respected equally?
- Why do some children continue to suffer in silence?
Gillu’s mission is to show and explain children’s rights, but also to remind everyone that with every right comes a responsibility. He firmly believes that understanding both rights and duties helps build a fairer and kinder society.
He will also remind authorities and adults of the pain children experience when systems fail them—when things are not done properly or justly. Gillu will speak openly about the real difficulties children face, including:
- Separation from parents,
- Domestic violence,
- Poverty and lack of food within families,
- Emotional neglect and fear.
Gillu’s life story itself is a powerful testimony. When he was only two years old, he had to travel abroad with his family because he was seriously ill. Thanks to the support of Puttinu Cares and after a long year of treatment, he returned to Malta healed. Today, he is healthy, strong, and determined to help others.
After a formal meeting among the adults involved, it was collectively decided that Gillu should represent the Children’s Section. His mother and father fully agreed with this decision. Gillu shared this news with a big smile, saying how happy he is—and those around him are equally proud and happy to support him.
Before ending his message, Gillu made one thing very clear:
Bullying must stop.
He bravely pointed out that very often it is adults who engage in bullying behaviors and then place the blame on children. This, he believes, must be challenged and changed.
A Message to All Children
Children, to become a hero you do not need a cape or a crown on your head.
You become a hero by having a kind heart, by helping as much as you can, and by standing up for those who are vulnerable.
If you look at history, all those who truly made a difference did so by doing good for others.
Thank you, children.
